"Somethin's Happenin' Down at the Stable"
This one dates from 2003, while sitting at the old Bar in Johnson City, Texas with my friends and fellow pickers Gale the fiddler, Lee, Penny, Jan, and George. It tells the Christmas story and some later events in a form patterned after songs from "Oklahoma", "Carousel", or "Show Boat". The Bar's spot is now occupied by the Blanco County Courthouse Annex. Somehow that is fitting.

Somethin's Happenin' Down at the Stable
(C)2003 Alan R. Cooper

Somethin's happ'nin' down at the Stable
There's a bright star shinin' on the desert sand
Lightin' up the way to Jesus
Whom our Lord has sent to please us
And to show us how to reach the Promised Land.

There's three wise men of the Ori'nt come to see him
Bringing gifts of myrrh and frankincense and gold
Now your soul can't be in danger
For the baby in the manger
Fulfills a promise made in days of old. ...

Do not fear for your flocks, gentle shepherds
For the greatest of your number has been born
And from Egypt to Hawaii
Folks have waited for Messiah
Who smiles on Bethlehem this starlit morn.

He has Mary and her Joseph there to hold him
And our God above protects him from all ill
Folks will feed on loaves and fishes
While he hears their prayers and wishes
And teaches us to do his Father
's will. ...

Every Christmastime we join in joyful singing
And recall the little child of ancient fame
Who, tho' he had not son nor daughter,
Went walking on the water,
And now folks rise in song to praise his name.

So, Everybody come to the Stable
There's a bright star shinin' on the desert sand
Lightin' up the face of Jesus
Whom our Lord has sent to please us
And to show us how to treat our fellow man.
